![]() This will always be the day before the specified first-day-of-the-week. The fiscal year ends the day before the next fiscal year starts, as determined by the four day rule. If there are three or fewer days from the specified start date of the fiscal year to the next occurring day of the week immediately preceding the specified first-day-of-the-week, the days are yielded to become part of the last week of the previous year. Thus, the week containing the first Thursday of the year is the first week of the year. For example, if the specified first-day-of-the-week is Monday, counting three days forward brings us to Thursday. ![]() The week containing the first occurrence in the year of that day of the week is the first week of the year. Yet another way of understanding the method is to find the day in the weekly cycle three days after the specified first-day-of-the-week. Put another way, the first week of the fiscal year is the first week that has the majority of its days (four or more) on or after the specified starting date of the year. Between zero and three days are borrowed from the previous year to make a seven day week. The four day rule states that if there are four or more days from the specified start date of the fiscal year to the next occurring day of the week immediately preceding the specified first-day-of-the-week, then those days form part of the first week of the year. To determine the closest first-day-of-the-week to the specified start date of the fiscal year, the ISO 8601 week date system four-day rule is used. The fiscal year begins on the specified first-day-of-the-week "closest" to the specified start date of the fiscal year (except for fiscal hierarchies using the Calendar weeks week pattern, which use the actual specified start date of the fiscal year). The default is Sunday, but any day may be chosen.Ī fiscal year has a specified start date (day and month). There are several ways of doing this, as explained below.Ī fiscal calendar has the following attributes:Ī fiscal year has a specified first-day-of-the-week. About Fiscal Calendar Attributesįiscal calendars have a number of settings to let you arrange the fiscal weeks so that they start and finish in step with the beginning and ending of the months. The 4-4-5 calendar doesn't allow all months to be compared to each other, as some are a week longer than the others, but it does allow comparison with the corresponding month in previous years. Patterns of 5-4-4 and 4-5-4 are also possible. Typically, the first and second months of each quarter are 4 weeks long, and the third month is 5 weeks long, known as "4-4-5" for short. Two of the three months are 4 weeks long, and the third is 5 weeks long. The 13 weeks are grouped into three months. The 4-4-5 calendar divides the year into four quarters. ![]() Data Hub uses the "4-4-5" calendar system to allocate weeks to months in a fixed pattern that repeats each year. If fiscal months are used in conjunction with fiscal weeks, a further method must be used to align the weeks with the months (and, hence, the quarters and semesters, which are just collections of months). Although ISO 8601 assumes that each week begins on a Monday, Data Hub allows the first-day-of-the-week to be set to any day of the week.įiscal quarters and semesters may be aligned with weeks easily enough, by assigning 13 weeks to each quarter (or 14 weeks if the quarter is the last quarter in a 53 week year) and 26 weeks to each semester (or 27 weeks if the semester is the second semester in a 53 week year). The week date system uses "leap weeks", so that each year is either 52 or 53 weeks long. A part of ISO 8601 is the week date system, which is used to assign and number the weeks within each year. ISO 8601 is an international standard dealing with the representation and exchange of date and time information. About the ISO 8601 Week Date System and the 4-4-5 CalendarĬentral to understanding the way Data Hub allocates fiscal weeks is the ISO 8601 week date system. The calendar may include semester, quarter, month, week and date levels. Several methods are available to do this. Fiscal calendars also let you create rules to ensure that the weeks and months start and finish together. You can define the start date for the fiscal year.
